The entirety of this song is so applicable to America, but these lines struck me the most. Of course America is loud and proud and acts like he’s the only country that matters - a lot of his citizens are that way too. But though Americans might seem like that to everyone else, nobody is truly happy with how things are run here at home, and some people are a bit less than slightly displeased. I figure that’s got to do awful things to a guy’s self-esteem, knowing that 300 million people are upset with him to varying degrees for various reasons. So obviously around everyone else he acts like he’s, well, the best, even though he probably has the worst self-image ever because he feels like so many of his citizens hate him.
I just read a sad prussia fanfic and made myself upset so

Much of my life had been devoted to trying not to cry in front of people who loved me, so I knew what Augustus was doing. You clench your teeth. You look up. You tell yourself that if they see you cry, it will hurt them, and you will be nothing but A Sadness in their lives, and you must not become a mere sadness, so you will not cry, and you say all of this to yourself while looking up at the ceiling, and then you swallow even though your throat does not want to close and you look at the person who loves you and smile.
He flashed his crooked smile, then said, “I lit up like a Christmas tree, Hazel Grace. The lining of my chest, my left hip, my liver, everywhere.”
